Hello! My name is Amanda and I am currently a fourth year student in the Biochemistry Honours Program. This year I am excited to start a fresh year as a returning SSSC mentor on the Career Track team. There are a few tips I have learned over the past two years that can help you throughout your academic career. I cannot stress enough how important it is to get involved in extra-curricular activities over the course of your program! Between school hours and studying, I took advantage of Ultimate Frisbee offered by both Carleton Athletics and external organizations including the Ottawa Carleton Ultimate Association. This was a great stress reliever for me and proved to be a great way to meet new people from other programs. I also had the privilege of being a mentor at the Paul Menton Centre as well as a Big Sister for elementary school students at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ottawa.
My interests not only include playing ultimate, but also watching hockey (I have learned that skating is not my forté) and even research! My interest in research started in first year when I was awarded a DSRI and continued into the next two summers with NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Awards. With these opportunities, I worked with Dr. Ken Storey where I determined the stability of enzymes under various external conditions. This year, I look forward to further challenging myself as both a TA and as the President of the Carleton Pre-Med Society while developing my academic goals. No matter what your goal is in school, I would be more than happy to chat with you about courses, studying habits or any involvement opportunities that interest you. So come by the SSSC for a visit and I look forward to meeting you!
