Anand C.

SSSC Team:
Career Team

Hi! My name is Anand (pronounced: On-in) and I’ll be one of your mentors on the Career Team. I’m a third year in the Biochemistry and Biotechnology combined honours program. You’ll most likely see me in my natural habitat (Steacie and Nesbitt) either working in the lab or studying. During the summer of 2015 I received a Dean’s Summer Research Internship and worked in Dr. Bill Willmore’s lab. During this I cloned a gene which encodes for mammaglobin b, a protein overexpressed in breast cancer cells, and worked on expressing this protein in E. coli. I also received an NSERC USRA and will continue to work in the Willmore lab during the summer of 2016. During this time I will be examining the cross-talk between oxidative and endoplasmic reticulum stresses on the function of a protein known as Nrf1. Working in a laboratory has given me the opportunity to learn through research. This has been a very rewarding experience as I have been able to use the theory learned in class for a greater purpose than just acing a test.In the past I have also been a volunteer note-taker at the Paul Menton Centre and plan to continue this in the future.

I enjoy seeking new opportunities and trying new things in general, which I encourage all of you to do as well! Aside from school, I enjoy watching sports, especially hockey and soccer. I’m also planning to run my first half marathon this year! This is my first year as mentor and I am very excited to meet all of you! First year is tough, so don’t be afraid to ask me questions. Whether it’s about becoming more organized, study tips, internship opportunities (locally, out-of-town, or abroad), or even about the Sens game last night! I wish you all the best in your first year of university. Come visit me at the SSSC if you have questions about anything or just want to chat!
